Last Day of School
Friday was officially the last day of Kindergarten for Riley, and the last day of 2nd grade for Tyler. SOB! They are growing so fast. Their first day of school was July 9th, 2007...
That day, we got up early, made cinnamon rolls for breakfast, picked out exactly the right thing to wear, and buzzed with excitement over Riley's first day of school ever, Tyler's first day of 2nd grade, and everyone's first day at the brand new, just opened, fresh paint and new playground elementary school. I was massively pregnant of course; Caleb was 6 days overdue. We had to park quite a ways away from the school because there were so many students, and parents, hurrying to find classrooms and take pictures. I rather liked the extra walk, at that point, i hoped that anything would induce labor. i had become - cumbersome...
We took Riley to his class, and we met his new teacher, Mrs. Rogers. Maybe it was because Riley had been my baby for so long, and Caleb wasn't quite here yet, maybe it was because i was eleventy months pregnant, but, i bawled and bawled when i saw my BABY starting kindergarten. (Don't get me wrong, i did the same thing when Tyler started pre-school AND Kindergarten. After all, he is my FIRST baby!) They did not let the parents enter the classroom. All the little Kindergarteners, my little Riley included, waved goodbye from the single file line they stood in, and walked away to go grow up, be independent, and expand the little world we'd so carefully kept them in.
Next we went in search of second grade, and it was hard to locate. After a few trips around and around, we became well acquainted with the layout of the school AND we found Tyler's classroom. We also met his new teacher Miss Devaney. Her classroom was beautifully and meticulously organized, and i fell in love with her at first sight. Right away, we found Tyler's desk, and discovered that he had become "Tyler J." because there was a Tyler E. that sat right across from him. (To this very day, if we run into classmates at Target or the grocery store, we always hear "Hi Tyler J.!")
After we said good bye to Tyler, i had to go immediately to a dr. appointment. I was being monitored twice a week to make sure the baby wasn't overcooked. But this day, Dr. decided it was time to have the baby and reserved a spot for me at the hospital. I nervously packed all the last minute things (except my toothbrush which really ticked me off) excited about the baby, scared about the delivery and all the while anxious to hear how the boys' day at school went. Riley was out of school first. We picked him up and he RAN out to us screaming "THIS WAS THE BEST DAY EVER!" I don't know how to describe how incredibly full of GLEE he was. You could see it dripping off of him. He loved loved school. Little did we know that very soon weekends would be a cause for upset when Riley didn't appreciate not being allowed to go to school.
Finally 3 pm rolled around and it was time to pick up Tyler. (My hospital bag was packed and in the truck, the new baby car seat sat waiting in the backseat. The boys didn't even know yet!) We got Tyler and heard all about him being "Tyler J", the big kids playground, the library, and the cafeteria food. After a snack and a juice, we packed a suitcase for the boys and dropped them off at grandma's house on our way to the hospital. The next day, July 10th, 2007, Tyler and Riley got their first absences on their official records, and their little brother Caleb was born.
Now it is May 2008; Tyler and Riley have finished their school year, and Caleb is 10 and a half months old.

Ceiling Fans
I realized last night that I am terrified of the ceiling fan. I have yet to switch over from down comforter to quilt, even though it went from winter to HOT in recent months. I sleep with just the sheet, while Shane prefers to roast under the blanket, which causes it to be halfway over me anyway. So, I turned on the fan. But as I lie in bed trying to fall asleep, I hear the fan wobble and squeak as it goes right round like a record player, and I imagine that at any moment, it will suddenly dislodge all of its screws at precisely the same time, sending the blades soaring thru the air, slicing into walls and into my skull. I try to tell myself that the entire idea is preposterous, but it's difficult to be rational when my impending death is spinning around above my own head. I did at least stand on the trunk at the end of the bed to investigate one source of the relentless squeaking; a LOOSE SCREW on one of the glass shades over one of the light bulbs. See? Not so crazy now am I?

My Plans for Summer Vacation
These daily blog topics are usually lame, and I only seem to get them sporadically, but the last 2 were decent so I'll play catch up.
The boys are on a year round school schedule. So we don't have a typical summer vacation. But their last day of this school year is May 23rd and they will be off until July 8th. We are planning a day trip to San Francisco sometime in June. Probably the week of Shane's birthday. I really want to take the boys to the Exploratorium, and to FAO Schwartz. I remember my first time visiting both of these and I was fascinated. The toy store is several stories high, and has men dressed as toy soldiers guarding the front doors. I remember that when i went, i was SORELY disappointed that they did not have the giant piano on the floor like in the movie BIG with Tom Hanks. (*EDIT* The SF store has CLOSED DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!! No more welcome to our world. This is a TRAGEDY!)
We also plan to take them to Micke Grove Park during break, for a visit to the zoo, a trip to Pixiewoods, and a pinic in the park.
Then in August, even though school will be back in session, we are going to Oregon for Shane's training. I am certain the boys will be THRILLED to ride on an airplane, and hopefully during our 2 week visit, we'll get to check out the children's museum as well as many of the other museum's and attractions. I also plan to meet up with a friend from Washington, and am trying to talk Shane into taking me to see Roloff Farm. (I love Little People Big World!)
Amid all of our fun plans, Shane and I will be turning 29 (for the FIRST time!), Tyler will turn 8, Caleb will have his first birthday, and Shane and I will have our 8th wedding anniversary.
Shaping up to be an eventful and memory filled summer!

Happy Mother's Day!
I was at Kohl's last night with all 3 kids. Tyler and Riley had to pee, i had the baby in the stroller, and all kinds of merchandise atop the stroller. There were men's and women's restrooms, and then a "family" restroom that was an individual room - no stalls. I decided to let both older boys go in there without me while i stood out in the hallway. They took forever. Finally Tyler cracks the door and asks me for some quarters. He said the paper towels were all gone and the only other ones you had to pay for. I told him to come out and just shake the water off his hands. He kept going on and on thru the store. "I really wanted to buy those towels for Riley. They looked like nicer towels anyways." i finally turned around and said "Those weren't paper towels Ty. They were for something else." A little time went by and he then quietly said "they were selling dynamite in there too."
i almost died right there. thank god i wasn't forced to explain the "dynamite".
Happy Mother's Day!!!!!!!!!!!
